Austen v. Bronte

We all know Jane Austen would win. If you don't know that, then maybe you should find another tumblr.

I wanted to write this to tell other women that the decision to have a mastectomy was not easy. But it is one I am very happy that I made. My chances of developing breast cancer have dropped from 87 percent to under 5 percent. I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer.

It is reassuring that they see nothing that makes them uncomfortable. They can see my small scars and that’s it. Everything else is just Mommy, the same as she always was. And they know that I love them and will do anything to be with them as long as I can. On a personal note, I do not feel any less of a woman. I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity.

Watch out Ridiculously Photogenic Emirati Guy, a new challenger has arrived. The princely, blue-eyed Iraqi male model has been making some buzz this week for his over-the-top, photoshopped and all too seductive head shots, which will either make you cringe or fall in love (or maybe both). For an extra kick of WTF, be sure to check out his even stranger video aptly titled “Ahmed Angel is Planet.” In a recent interview with theInternational Business Times, Angel revealed that he is currently studying medicine in Belarus and that he is “not a model” but a “Top Model,” whatever that means.

A manuscript page from Wallace Stegner’s novel Crossing to Safety. Stegner apologized that his markings are not more revealing: “My methods are prelapsarian and prewordprocessarian. It takes me many rewritings to get a first draft, and all the chapters that went into it have been thrown away successively until I get something that will read consecutively. I go through that with an editing pencil and retype it to make a relatively clear second draft.”

I loved this book.

There were 74 schools that showed a return of $1 million or more on the investment in an education, while 30 schools had a negative return on investment—meaning the cost of attending was more than what the students would make up with increased wages, even over a 30-year period. Is college worth it? It depends on where you go. (via pacificstand)

Bulldozer destroys Mayan pyramid in Belize
AP:

A construction company has essentially destroyed one of Belize’s largest Mayan pyramids with backhoes and bulldozers to extract crushed rock for a road-building project, authorities announced on Monday.
The head of the Belize Institute of Archaeology, Jaime Awe, said the destruction at the Nohmul complex in northern Belize was detected late last week. The ceremonial center dates back at least 2,300 years and is the most important site in northern Belize, near the border with Mexico.
